The Advanced DNA Forensic Facility combines an international-standard ancient DNA laboratory with expertise in ancient DNA analysis and human genetics to provide specialist DNA identification of degraded human remains. The Facility can provide forensically useful genetic profiles from highly degraded human remains by applying existing methodologies, and developing new approaches, within a NATA accredited and fully validated forensic framework.
The Facility, part of the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA, provides an international standard laboratory, unique in the Southern Hemisphere, to handle and analyze human remains in a contamination free environment. The laboratory is geographically isolated from other DNA facilities to prevent cross contamination and utilizes highly stringent HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtered positive air pressure, UV irradiation and other decontamination measures, combined with strict personal protective equipment and personnel workflow to ensure a DNA free working environment.
